Rimowa Duty Free in Frankfurt Airport

Hi All,

I will have a transfer at Frankfurt Airport for about 10 hours. Traveling on a USA Passport (in case your recommendations require leaving the terminal/airport). I will arrive to Frankfurt T1, and have an onwards flight to Incheon Seoul.

Is there a Rimowa Duty Free Store (or Lufthansa that carries Rimowa) within the terminal or airport?

I am after the Silver Integral IATA Cabin Trolley, and don't want to pay USA or Asia prices.

If you have the store name or phone number, that would be great. I would then call them to confirm pricing and ask them to reserve the item if possible.

Many Thanks!

There was a store carrying Rimowa products inside the airport, expensive and not duty free.

The LH Worldshop is in town, about a 10 minute tram ride total time directly from the airport. Your problem here is if the Worldshop carries the actual Silver Integral line or not, as I have never seen it there. LH stores carry Rimowa LH-designed models, which I believe are much better than the Silver Integral line, including alu and polycarbonate. I would email or call them directly first to confirm they carry what model you want.

KAUFHOF, a department store in Frankfurt, a short walk across the square from the Worldshop does carry the Rimowa Silver Integral line. Prices here are reasonable, but again I would email or call to confirm they have the item in stock and can hold it for you.

Remember to keep THE ACTUAL CARRY-ON AND THE SALES RECEIPTS with you when departing for your flight to Korea, for your tax refund.

I hope this is helpful.

@Swissaire - Thanks for the info. I'm planning on doing the same thing whilst on my stopover. I was thinking of picking it up on the way in (FRA is just a transit), but it sounds like in order to get the refund it really needs to be my outbound leg.

Do you recommend any other shops other than Kaufhof in the city centre that are authorised dealers? I actually checked Kaufhof's website and they don't seem to carry Rimowas. As an aside, I heard from somewhere, that online retailers like Koffer-direct are not authorised resellers. Not really sure if this matters in all honesty.

I would certainly call ahead to make sure they carry the one that I'm looking for to make the process as efficient as possible.

Yes, the KAUFHOF website leaves room for improvement. However the majority of the staff speak English, so you might consider calling them.

The Silver Integral product has been carried by KAUFHOF for many years, but they might not have in stock exactly what you want when you arrive. I replaced our newly purchased and destroyed ( first flight-return leg ) Blue polycarbonate XXL case at KAUFHOF with a Silver Integral XXL purchased off the floor.

Our new case was discovered DOA at FRA with one hinge and support torn away, and LH refunded us in full, no questions asked. They gave use a plastic bag for our packed items, storage, while we shopped in town. We took the FRA airport U-Bahn to the city centre, selected and bought the new case, had dinner, returned, repacked, and still had time for our connecting alpine flight home.

Perhaps a call to KAUFHOF to order, pay, secure and hold the item might be one suggestion.

The LH Weoldshop store in town features LH-marque Rimowa products. Sadly the blue-banded Silver Intergral is not one of them, at least officially.

There are other stores in the area, in fact one in the airport ( carrying the conspicously colourful Gold finish cases recently ) but again, not official Rimowa.

If it really must be the Silver Integral, I would suggest you email Rimowa and see what they can do to help and accomodate your purchase during your 10 hour layover ?

I should have specified that I'm not the original poster and am not looking for the Silver Integral per-se. Actually, I'm looking at the Limbo, which is the polycarbonate version, I believe.

How long was your connection in FRA to provide you enough time to get everything done? Obviously, I want to make sure I schedule enough time to get through immigration/security, etc.

Obviously, buying at the airport would be most efficient but I don't think we'd get the price, selection, etc.

I'm a big fan of the Limbo but I'd just like to recommend not buying one as cabin baggage. The weight premium over the standard Salsa eats into the cabin weight allowance, particularly if travelling Lufthansa (8kg limit).

For cabin baggae I would go for the regular Salsa, especially the new models which have improved packing fittings internally.

For regular checked baggage though, i think the Limbo ones are great. If you buy at the Lufthansa Worldshop in the airport take a look at the chocolate-brown version (and note, the Lufthansa special editions aren't called Salsa, Limbo, etc. the Limbo is called "Deluxe").

Thank you for the excellent update information and link.

For those interested, that would provide a solution to those that wish to buy LH Rimowa products while in-transit through FRA. I would also suggest calling ahead to confirm my arrival schedule regarding any online order made for products to be picked up.

Is there anywhere in the airport? I was told there is a store by baggage claim #16 that is much cheaper than anywhere else. I do have a 4 hour layover and could venture out if necessary.

Hi LACharger -

Yes, it is worth it, if you want a Rimowa case at good value.

If you are speaking about the Lufthansa Worldshop store, there are now two locations inside the FRA Airport, as reported by FT member 2035 back in 09. 2012.

If you want to only look, you have plenty of time.

If you know what you want to buy, then contact the LH Worldshop first, order and pay for the item, and have it waiting for you upon your arrival, to save time. There is even a service to hand-deliver your new case for you, inside the airport ( I believe it is an additional 30 Euros, but I would check to be sure ). A real time saver !

Note: You still must show the item and your sales receipt to the authorities at FRA before you depart, to claim and receive your VAT refund. Your new case must fly out of Germany with you as carry-on, or checked luggage, and cannot be posted by FEDEX, or DHL, to qualify for the VAT refund.

The LH Worldshop catalogue, with the contact information, is available online. Ensure that you receive a confirmation email or FAX, to have everything waiting for you prior to your arrival. I have attached the LH link, in English for you.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks, Swissaire!

I want to buy some pieces while I'm there but I only see 1 piece that I want at the LH Worldshop. I wanted to look at the Topas Titanium pieces. I use the handcarry and looking for a larger piece also.

Is there anywhere else at the airport? Is there really somewhere near baggage claim #16?

Edited: The piece I wanted is out of stock so that is no longer an option either.

Hi LACharger -

? Out of stock or not, What item is it that you are looking for ?

Options:

1. Check with LH Worldshop and see if the item you want is being sold in the outlet store they have. If it is still available, then ask if it can be paid for and delivered to you at the FRA Worldshop when you arrive.

2. If you would like something from Rimowa directly, then yes, there are stores in FRA that sell Rimowa products and other luggage. Go to the FRA online directory for other store contact information. To avoid a wild chase with nothing gained, I would contact these stores first to see what they have, and your cost. Most stores have English speakers employed. Again, get written confirmation.

I did hear of a store in FRA a decade ago that carried Rimowa, and made the mistake of not calling ahead.. When passing through outbound from FRA, I allowed a little extra time before my connection in order to stroll around and shop.

When I walked into the store, all that was carried were 3 pieces of the gold coloured alu cases as a matched set. Not my cup of tea, even with the scarlet lining. The cases were also marked up even with the VAT rebate, with a price that only a Sheik or Prince would enjoy. I bought a few books instead of a luggage box.

I have always called and verified with an email or fax back up since that experience.

One that I'm trying to get is the Salsa Air Mini Multiwheel for my daughter:

http://www.rimowa.com/en-us/salsa-air/820.42.22.4

I also want to get a laptop case to go with my Topas Titanium hand carry--maybe the Salsa Deluxe Hybrid Notebook. It's difficult having to open up my suitcase every time I go through security to take my laptop out.

I'd also like to look at a larger Topas Titanium--maybe the 82.0 or 84.0.

USA Duty Fees?

I was trying to buy 2 Rimowa Salsa Air cases while in France but the cases I wanted were not in stock and time ran out to find it in another location. Looks like kofferworld.de would send to me in the US, my next stop before heading back to NZ. But I don't know how much the duty might be. If anyone did order from Germany and get delivery in the US, how much should I anticipate in extra fees? Value of cases & shipping is 670 Euros (they deduct the VAT on the order!)

Cheers, wrenz

The Salsa Air Mini was out of stock at the store I looked at but I did get the Bolero laptop case for 259 euros at a luggage store around the corner from the Thai Airways check in counter.

I had the option of taking a 10% discount on the spot or getting a stamp from customs to receive the 19% tax refund. Since I had a 4.5 hour layover, I thought it wouldn't be a problem to get the stamp but I had to clear security and passport control, get the stamp and then go back out to the store--and then have to clear security and passport control again.
